Japp Family Genealogy

A past search on the website of Ellis Island shows that from the time they started keeping records in 1892, a total of 96 people with the last name of Japp arrived in America through Ellis Island. My ancestor arrived before that, so I'm sure that several others also arrived before 1892. I'll be happy to start a new line of ancestors, just send in your Japp genealogy information.

1. JOHN FREIDERICK JAPP{1} Sr. was born September 10, 1836 in Holstein, Germany, and died May 09, 1916. He married CATHERINA WIESE, daughter of Asmus Wiese (photo). She was born November 09, 1852 in Holstein, Germany, and died July 02, 1942. Marriage records transcribed to online databases of Scott County, Iowa from 1867 spells her name "Ida Margaretha Catharina Wiese". The next entry is a marriage for "Henry Wiese" on the same day. John Freiderick Japp came to America in 1857 and settled in Iowa. He married Catherine Ida Wiese in Scott County, Iowa. She came to America in 1865 with her parents. Her 1942 newspaper obituary says they were married in 1869, not 1867 as the transcribed records state. The transcribed records spell "Wiese" but the obituary spells "Weise". The obit also says John and Catherine moved to Omaha where they lived until 1871 when they moved to a farm near Kennard, NE. Later they moved to Nebraska and took up a homestead south-east of Kennard, NE. To this union were born 12 children.

Here is the newspaper obituary of Catherine Wiese Japp. (File is 131k) At the time of her death, Catherine (Wiese) Japp was survived by 11 of her 12 children, 54 grand-children, 69 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
